J Rutan Flores
Economist and civil engineer. Importer and builder. In Mexico since 1999.
About
J Rutan Flores studied economics and engineering, and he's spent 27 years and most of his working life in Mexico. His independent firm is Rutanamex.
He knew machines before he knew markets: first as a tank turret mechanic in the US Army, then as a field representative for a maker of industrial gluing equipment, inside canneries, carton plants, print shops and food-freezing plants across Northern California. In Mexico he has imported and exported, built homes and developments, managed construction and written reports for the people who have to decide.
He and his brother were raised by a single mother from the Philippines, who brought them up on her tips at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. She's on every page he writes. He started his working life washing dishes, and he's still sure the most important person in a restaurant is the one at the sink.
He's the father of seven and the grandfather of six. He and his patient, loving wife of thirty-plus years live in Yucatán, where they spoil their three rescue dogs, four cats and Rainbow, their green and red parrot.
The Economics of Mexico is his work written down, dated and sourced, in twelve books. For free data on Mexico's economy, see rutanamex.com. For questions about the books, use the contact form.
